A log dogtrot structure typically comprises two one-room cabins under a single roof. The doors of the cabins face each other, with the covered area between them known as a dogtrot. A Canton historic home in this style goes by the name of Tilda Bogue, and this has featured on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. Construction of the property dates back to the mid 1800's, and it has a movie claim to fame in that a few scenes from the Coen Brothers "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou" were shot there.
The Charles F. Smith House stands at 140 Semmes Avenue, and this structure has historic significance for its Queen Anne style architecture. Construction of the building dates to the late 1800's, and although presently unused, it served as a private residential dwelling over much of its life. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
Located at 305 Quail Road, the Long Moss Plantation House is constructed in a Greek Revival style, and its historical importance was noted when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. This building also goes by the name Colonel Richard Ivy Holliday House after the man credited with building it. The construction of the property dates to the 1840's, and in its time it has served as both a school and a home.
The Sedgewood Plantation House, located at 2607 Virlilia Road is another historic building constructed in the Greek Revival style. Built in 1842, the main construction material was heart cypress. The structure served as the main home for the owners of the plantation, and remains in use as a residential property to this day.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
Construction of the Young House dates to the early 20th century, with the home being named after the original builder and owner, Samuel Young. Built in a craftsman style using local lumber, the property stands at 3463 North Liberty Street. It remains a private dwelling to this day, and its historical significance was recognized in 2008, when it became listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The individual homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places form an important part of the historic buildings in the city, but they are not the only historic buildings in Canton. The East Canton Historic District is included in its entirety on the register and includes a number of historic buildings, including residential homes. The district covers East Academy, East Fulton, Madison and Priestly streets, with some of the historic buildings within the area including Priestly Mansion, Mosby Home, and Wohlden House.
