Some people find it enjoyable, and even make vacations of, visiting southern plantation homes. These homes are usually full of history as they portray a way of life in the south that no longer exists.   1. Drayton Hall

    • Visit Drayton Hall in historic Charleston, S. C. The Drayton family owned the plantation from 1738 and for seven generations before the National Trust (an organization dedicated to restoring historical monuments and buildings) bought it. Drayton Hall went from a rice plantation at first to a military headquarters and a retreat home. It is the only remaining plantation home along the Ashley River. Drayton Hall sponsors school and adult group tours as well as special events. Drayton Hall hosts different events throughout the year such as concerts and different family oriented events.     Cedar Grove

    • Look for Cedar Grove in Vicksburg, Miss. Cedar Grove is now a restaurant and inn. This antebellum home was standing during the Civil War and can prove it because of a cannon ball stuck in the wall of one room. This elegant bed and breakfast has 33 rooms and five acres of gardens for guests to wander through. Five buildings across the property house rooms for rent. The bed and breakfast rate includes a tour of the entire mansion. Cedar Grove is also available for weddings. Call for current rates and reservations.

    Boone Hall

    • Experience what life was like in the 1800s while visiting Boone Hall Plantation in Mt Pleasant, S. C. The driveway leading to the plantation house is stereotypical of plantations with a paved path shrouded by huge, 200-year-old oak trees. While plantation crops of the 1800s were mainly cotton and pecans, the plantation is still working by producing a variety of fruits and vegetables. These are available for sale to each visitor, as are other items in the country store. Enjoy different events at Boone Hall Plantation over the year such as a strawberry festival and concerts.     Longwood Plantation

    • Longwood Plantation includes 300 acres of property in Huger, S. C. This is a working polo estate for local polo players. Longwood (or Pompion Hill) Plantation was the home of Pierre de St. Julien de Malacare and his family during the 1600s. The property is on the Cooper River and was witness to a battle during the Revolutionary War. The Plantation is available for weddings on a reservation basis. See the web site for current rates.
