The city was founded in 1858. Camilla is located to the Southeast of Newton. The distance between the cities is 3.1 miles, and Camilla is considered the nearest city to Newton. While close to many urban areas, Camilla does offer a rural setting for businesses and those who want to live in calm neighborhoods. The population is 5,669 residents, which is significantly higher than Newton. Camilla is at the center of a well-organized agricultural production structure. In addition, crops and products such as peanuts, poultry and vegetables are grown in fields surrounding the area.
Baconton was founded in 1903, and is located in Mitchell County. It is 3.4 miles to the northeast of Newton, Georgia. Baconton received its name after industrialist Robert James Bacon came to town with his wife in 1858 and purchased 4,000 acres of land for $4,000. He was a cotton planter, but he was most famous for being the director of a railroad company. The city is roughly 1.5 square miles and has a population of 801 residents. The George W. Jackson house is historical in the city because it's the largest and most remarkable Victorian era residence.
Branchville is located in Mitchell County and about 3.5 miles south of Newton. Branchville is considered a city of poverty: 30 percent of residents had income below the poverty level in 2009. The population hasn't been updated, but in 2007, nearly 1100 residents lived in the city. The city is composed of 70 percent whites, 25 percent blacks, 1.5 percent Hispanics and other ethnicities. Branchville is one of the most impoverished cities in the entire state.
Milford is located in Bakers County and is approximately 3.5 miles west of Newton, Georgia. Statistics haven't been updated, but in 2007, Milford was occupied by 1,300 people. The area of land is 160.8 square miles. A big issue in the city is the unemployment rate. In March of 2011, 9.8 percent of Georgia's people were without jobs, but Milford itself had 8.4 percent of its residents in the unemployment line.
