Winter Activities in Fryeburg, Me.

Settled in 1763, Fryeburg, Me. was the first town settled in the White Mountain region of Maine and New Hampshire. Visitors to Fryeburg can kayak or canoe on the Saco River and Lovewell's Pond, enjoy hiking, camping and swimming on Jockey Cap, and visit various historic monuments and buildings in and around the town. During the winter, travelers can also enjoy skiing and snowboarding in nearby ski resorts, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and sleigh rides.

    • Two ski resorts within a 15-minute drive of Fryeburg provide mountain trails for the skiing and snowboarding enthusiast. Shawnee Park (shawneepark.com) offers more than 40 trails, a half-pipe and two terrain parks, and the Cranmore Mountain Resort (cranmore.com) features 54 trails and three terrain parks. Both resorts offer lessons to beginners and night skiing. Over 65 kilometers of cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails are also available at the Bear Notch Ski Touring Center (bearnotchski.com), approximately a 25-minute drive from Fryeburg.

    Farm Visits

    • Fryeburg is home to Maine's largest fall agricultural fair, and the region's farms feature winter activities. Weston's Farm & Sugar House (westonsfarm.com) offers tours and maple syrup samples, and its shop features Maine-made items, including jams, paintings, folk art, pies, cider and handmade gifts. In December, visitors can also purchase Christmas trees, wreaths and ornaments. Visitors to High View Farm (high-view-farm.com), approximately a 30-minute drive from Fryeburg, can take sleigh rides with a stop in the woods where guides build a fire, allowing guests to roast marshmallows and drink hot chocolate.

    Rock and Ice Climbing

    • The granite cliffs of the White Mountains offer leisure and challenging climbing opportunities throughout the year. Based in North Conway, New Hampshire, approximately a 15-minute drive west of Fryeburg, the Mountain Guides Alliance (mountainguidesalliance.com) provides winter climbing lessons with professional climbers and teachers. Courses in mountaineering, mountain climbing and ice climbing are offered, as well as excursions to Mount Washington and a four-day tour to the Presidential Range Traverse. The ice climbing season begins in early December and lasts until April.

    Snowmobiling

    • Visitors to Fryeburg can explore the surrounding area by snowmobile during the winter. ITS 80, part of Maine's Interconnected Trail System, runs just north of the town and connects with additional trails in New Hampshire. For visitors without a snowmobile, North East Snowmobiles Rentals (northeastsnowmobile.com) in Fryeburg offers half- or full-day rentals, as well as trail maps. All visitors receive instruction and an overview of trails near Fryeburg before departing. Guides are also available upon request to assist visitors as they explore the nearby terrain.
