Winter Activities in Nebraska

For some, the words “winter” and “Nebraska” may conjure thoughts of snowdrifts piled high and freezing temperatures that leave few activities for people to enjoy. While it is true that the average winter temperature in Nebraska is a chilling 25 degrees F, as reported by Current Results Research News and Science Facts, and the state does get a fair amount of snow, plenty of winter activities there can entertain the entire family.

  1. Winter Sports

    • Both residents and visitors alike can take part in many winter sports. Ice and snow activities such as ice skating, ice fishing, sledding and tobogganing are offered at almost all of the state parks and recreation areas in the state. The many hiking trails that wind through the region provide ideal paths for cross-country skiers. For those interested in downhill skiing or snowboarding, the Mt. Crescent Ski Area is just a 15-minute drive from Omaha, though the resort is located across the state line in Honey Creek, Iowa.

    Wildlife Viewing

    • In the Nebraska Sandhills region you can view several migratory bird species heading south, such as snow geese, Canada geese, multiple duck species and bald eagles. Though winter bird-watching is the most popular winter wildlife-viewing activity in Nebraska, you can also find Bighorn sheep, elk, white-tailed deer, Pronghorn antelope and mule deer making their way across the snowy fields.

    Camping

    • Nebraska is home to 86 parks, all of which are open year-round for camping. Many of the state parks or recreational parks in Nebraska, such as the Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area or Eugene T. Mahoney State Park, offer a variety of winter activities, such as hiking, snow sports and holiday events.

    Hunting and Fishing

    • Beginning the first Tuesday after Labor Day through the end of May, portions of Nebraska’s state recreation areas are open for hunting season. Types of game found in Nebraska include waterfowl, Bighorn sheep, deer and elk. Fishing is available year-round. Permits are required to legally hunt or fish in Nebraska. Contact the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Permitting System for hunting or fishing rules and regulations and to obtain permits.
