American Travel Ideas

The United States size, coupled with its multiple climate zones, gives travelers a wide array of options for vacation destinations. Whether you choose to travel by car, plane or rail you will find several American destinations to fit your individual travel style. Each region of the United States has its own original flavor and attractions.
  1. Northeast

    • If you are an outdoor enthusiast, hike on Maine's rugged shoreline, visit the Niagara Falls area of upstate New York or find a summer rental on the Jersey shore where you can enjoy the Atlantic Ocean. If you prefer winter sports, go downhill skiing at one of Vermont's ski resorts near Killlington. History buffs must head to Massachusetts, Philadelphia and New York where you can respectively visit famous Revolutionary War historical sites, America's first capital and Ellis Island. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, visit Cape Cod and stay at one of the quaint bed and breakfasts.

    Midwest

    • If you travel to the Midwest, America's heartland, you will find a pleasant balance between rural and urban destinations. Seeing fall foliage in Wisconsin's Door County or fishing in one of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes are laid-back options for nature lovers visiting the Midwest. If you prefer more of an urban feel, head to Chicago, Minneapolis or Cleveland. Minneapolis and Chicago both offer visitors numerous options for dining, theater and shopping and you can visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Visit America's largest indoor shopping mall, the Mall of America, near Minneapolis in Bloomington, Minnesota. A road trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota gives you the opportunity to visit Mount Rushmore, Flintstone's Bedrock City in Custer and Bear Country U.S.A.

    South

    • Travelers who have no desire to experience the cold will enjoy visiting one its many beaches. Many people travel to Miami or Fort Meyers to enjoy Florida beaches. For something different, visit Destin, Fort Walton Beach or Pensacola on Florida's Gulf Coast. If you are interested in Civil War history, drive along the Mississippi River on the Natchez Trace to visit historical sites or spend some time gazing in the museums of Washington D.C. Music lovers must visit Austin, Texas, which has the most live music venues per capital in the U.S. For an international flare, attend the Cinco de Mayo festival in San Antonio, go salsa dancing in one of Miami's many clubs, or stroll through the French Quarter of New Orleans.

    West

    • Backpackers, hikers, bikers and mountain climbers head west to the Rocky Mountains to bond with the Earth. Stay at a dude ranch in Cheyenne, Wyoming or going horseback riding in Aspen. If you prefer a more cosmopolitan atmosphere, travel to Seattle to enjoy seafood at Ivar's and climb the world famous space needle. Take a cruise from Seattle to Alaska for some of the most picturesque views in the U.S. The Mediterranean climate and Hollywood are big draws to Southern California, but when you get bored with stargazing in California, you can always head for Hawaii. In addition to postcard-perfect beaches, you can visit the Polynesian Cultural Center, Pearl Harbor, Volcanoes National Park and the Fern Gully.
