Time Travel Ideas

Ranging as far into the past as the Hindu story of King Revaita, who, upon his return from meeting Brahma, found that 27 caturyugas had passed on Earth, time travel has been a common theme in human mythological and literary works. The idea of traveling to a time other than one's own simply fascinates people. Surprisingly, it is not as difficult as one might think; in fact, you're doing it now.
  1. The Constant of Time Travel

    • All people and everything that they know are constantly traveling through time. Constantly, you move through time on a linear path. Rather than being points in the dimension of time, past and future describe directions and the present merely describes where you happen to be.

    The Problem of Direction

    • Unlike space, where there are three axes, in each of which you can move in up to 360 degrees, time is one dimensional. There's only back (past) and forth (future) in the dimension of time. Moreover, time travel to the past is generally understood to be impossible, as it would violate the second law of thermodynamics. So, there's only really one direction anything can go in time -- the direction in which everything goes.

    Altering the Speed of Travel

    • Although reversing through time is impossible, accelerating is not. Albert Einstein theorized and experimentation confirmed that an object traveling at immense speeds, near the speed of light, will experience time slower than the rest of the Universe, having the net result of transporting that object through time at an accelerated rate in comparison to everything else.

    Cryonics

    • While not really changing the rate at which you, as an object, would travel through time, cryonics would provide a means by which one's consciousness could be instantaneously brought from one point in time to another, located far into the former point's future. Unfortunately, while the part of cryonics that deals in freezing the subject has been mastered, reanimation is a problem that remains unsolved.
