Highest Peaks East of the Mississippi

While most the tallest mountains in the United States are in the western mountain ranges, hikers in the eastern United States have access to tall peaks. The eastern region of the country features relatively tall mountains in the Appalachian Mountains, which stretches from the southern United States to New England. Other ranges with tall peaks include the White Mountains in New Hampshire and Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina.
  1. Mount Mitchell

    • The tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River is Mount Mitchell, a 6,684-foot peak in North Carolina's Black Mountains. This mountain is in the heart of the Tarheel State's Mount Mitchell State Park; this 1,946 recreation area has picnic areas, campgrounds and hiking and bicycling trails. Mount Mitchell is accessible form the Blue Ridge Parkway and State Highway 197.

    Clingman's Dome

    • At 6,643 feet, Clingman's Dome is the second-highest peak east of the Mississippi River. This mountain is also the tallest peak in Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains. The Great Smoky Mountains are in East Tennessee. Clingman's Dome rides the Tennessee-North Carolina border; both states share half of the mountain. This mountain is also the highest point along the 2,144-mile Appalachian Trail.

    Mount Washington

    • Situated in New Hampshire, Mount Washington is the tallest mountain in the state at 6,288 feet, making it the third-highest point east of the Mississippi River. Mount Washington is also the highest peak in New England's White Mountains. The top of this mountain features Mount Washington Observatory, a facility with scenic views of the White Mountains; the Observatory is open for the public to tour.     Mount Rogers

    • Mount Rogers stands at 5,729 feet, making it the tallest mountain in Virginia and the fourth-highest mountain in the eastern United States. However, Mount Rogers is the tallest peak east of the Mississippi with no trail leading to the peak's summit. This Virginia peak is in the heart of the Commonwealth State's Lewis Fork Wilderness Area. A portion of the Appalachian Trail passes by Mount Rogers.

    Mount Marcy

    • New York's highest peak is Mount Marcy, which is 5,343 feet tall. Mount Marcy is the tallest mountain in the Adirondack Mountains and the fifth-tallest mountain in the eastern United States. The seven-mile Van Hoevenberg Trail provides passage to the summit of Mount Marcy. From the summit's peak, hikers are able to see Lake Placid, Vermont's Green Mountains and Marcy Dam, a body of water next to the mountain.

    Mount Katahdin

    • Situated in Baxter State Park, the 5,268-foot Mount Katahdin is the tallest peak in Maine and the sixth-highest peak east of the Mississippi River. Mount Katahdin does not belong to a mountain range, making it the tallest isolated peak in the eastern United States. Mount Katahdin rests at the northern end of the Appalachian Trail.
