Alaska offers many travel options that are not found in many countries. There are options available for those who are adventuresome and want to trek into the mountains, or more casual options for those that want to see the beauty of Alaska while being comfortable in a cruise ship or hotel. Due to the different sunlight and dark hours make sure you visit during the recommended time for your activity of interest, as some tours and trips are only available in specific seasons.
You can travel through areas of Alaska by train. There are different trips you can take, travel from Ancourage to Fairbanks, or see the White Pass and the Yukon route from Skagway to White Pass summit. View the stunning scenery through glass enclosed cars or from open platforms designed specifically for viewing. Travel by train to Talkeetna or Denali National park to see deer, moose and bears in their natural habitat. Enjoy views of the Alaskan ranges including Broad Pass and Hurricane Gulch. Travel by train during the day and stay in different towns along the way.
Take a guided kayaking tour to see Alaska from a new perspective. Kayak the Prince William Sound to view black legged Kittiwake sea birds as well as view the spectacular coastline. Kayak through the Passage Canal to see hidden coves and waterfalls. Other popular kayaking spots include Blackstone bay, Shotgun Cove, Nelli Juan Sound, Harriman Fjord and Whale Bay. Kayaking trips are available as day trips, multiday trips, classes and boat assisted kayaking trips.
Many travelers come to Alaska to see the glaciers. There are cruises available specifically for glaciers as this is the best way to see glaciers up close. The nearest glaciers to Anchorage are Kenai Fjord and Prince William Sound. Kenai Fjords are the perfect spot to cruise Kenai Fjords National Park and to see harbor seals, sea lions and whales. Prince William Sounds have tidewater glaciers. A shorter trip to see glaciers is available at Portage Lake. Other glaciers that are more difficult to access and require several days of travel include Spencer glacier and Knik glacier.
Alaska is the home of the famous Iditarod dog sledding race. Alaska offers many opportunities to try dog sledding, either for a day or as an expedition lasting several days. Tours start with the first snow fall. You can take lessons to learn how to drive your own dog team or take a tour on a longer trip with an experienced musher on board. Tours that include camping or other accommodation at B&Bs and hotels are available.
