Sundays in Chicago need never be boring. Beaches on the Lake Michigan shore offer swimming and the many parks in the area have sporting facilities, such as baseball fields. For Sunday evening entertainment, there are theaters, movie theaters and nightclubs. Restaurants are quieter and it’s easier to get a table. Many festivals and events fall on Sundays and admission to attractions is sometimes free on Sundays.
The Swim Café hosts scrabble sessions on Sunday afternoons each week and there is no admission charge. Individuals and groups are welcome to take part and there are prizes for the winner. The prizes include a free drink or dessert, and top prizes include games and tickets to the theater.
Everyone is welcome at the weekly Sunday cycle rides at sunrise. Members of the Oak Park Cycle Club members and others cycle through the Oak Park neighborhood at a pace to suit everyone there. The participants for that day decide on the route to be taken. If the weather is poor, the ride will not take place.
The Playground Theater presents a live show of improvisational comedy every Sunday for free. Comedy is delivered by three comedy groups called Koleno, Panty Filers and Hair Club for Men. Part of the show involves audience participation, as they are asked to suggest topics for the comics to act out.
The Chicago Children’s Museum has a no admission charge for children 15 years and under on the first Sunday of each month. Sponsored by the Target store, Target Free Sunday is an opportunity to see the museum's collection and to participate in special family activities. Target is involved in educational programs for families in the U.S. The permanent exhibits include dinosaurs, an interactive inventing laboratory, a replica schooner and an aviation themed playground.
The sport of bike polo takes place in free sessions called "Pickup" on Sunday afternoons. Organized by the Chicago Bike Polo group, everyone is welcome to try the bike version of traditional polo. Mallets and balls are used, as in conventional polo with horses. The usual location is Garfield Park but other locations are sometimes used (see website in Resources).
