Maui, Hawaii is one of the top destinations in Hawaii with a little something for everyone. Hana is a little further off the already-not-so-beaten track, but many say the destination is worth it. Located on the eastern side of the island of Maui, when people think of Hawaii, it is often images of Hana that they conjure up in their head.
Many guidebooks recommend the drive down to Hana as an attraction in and of itself. The road has a number of twists and turns through the jungle and ends in Hana itself. The drive is doable as a day trip, but is highly recommended as something to be done in one day, with at least a stopover in Hana at night.
For the botanical lover, there are two gardens located in Hana: Kahanu Gardens and Kaia Ranch Tropical Botanical Gardens. Kahanu is larger and more of a tourist attraction in its own right. Within the grounds of Kahanu, you will find Pi'ilanihale Heiau, an ancient temple believed to be the oldest on the island. Kaia Ranch is a bed and breakfast that operates and owns the smaller botanical garden Kaia Ranch Tropical Botanical Gardens. Kaia Ranch's gardens are open to public as well as to its guests.
Hana Bay beach in Hana is ideal for snorkeling, thanks to a corral reef that works as a barrier. Due to this barrier, the waters are quite calm and allow for a perfect and clear view of life under water. This also means that the beach is amongst the safest in Hawaii for children. Children should never be left unattended, but the waters in Hana Bay are calm enough for the most timid child, as there are no swells or waves that occur on other beaches in Hawaii.
The Wai'anapanapa park is a miniature offering of everything that attracts visitors to Hawaii in the first place. Black sand beaches, sea stacks and blow holes are part of its charm. You can wander through caves or hike through the jungle. Perfect for a family or romantic getaway, the park has no entrance fee, and has cabins and camping grounds nearby.
