Hiking Trails on Wawayanda Mountain in Wawayanda State Park in New Jersey

Wawayanda State Park has 60 miles of marked trails running through various terrains, such as forests, wetlands and mountains. Wawayanda Lake has a beach, boat slips and fishing spots. Visitors have hiking access to an array of natural sites, including Wawayanda Mountain, Terrace Pond and the Wawayanda Swamp.

  1. Appalachian Trail

    • Approximately 2,181 miles long, the Appalachian Trail ranges from Georgia to Maine and touches a total of fourteen states. A 19.6-mile-long section runs through Wawayanda State Park, which is marked with white blazes. Sometimes rocky and narrow, this trail provides a rugged experience for hikers. The trail is for hikers only and is the only trail to connect to the Wawayanda Mountain vista trail.

    Wawayanda Ridge Trail

    • The Wawayanda Ridge Trail is located on Wawayanda Mountain in the northern section of the park. The trail connects hikers from the Appalachian Trail to Pinwheel's Vista, which is the vista point for Wawayanda Mountain. The vista overlooks Vernon Valley and Pochuck Mountain, and hikers can view parts of the Catskills as well. The Wawayanda Ridge Trail totals 0.8 miles from the main trail to Pinwheel's Vista.

    Terrace Pond Trails

    • There are six trails in the Terrace Pond area, which range from 1 to 3.8 miles and can be combined in various ways. This area is located in the southern section of Wawayanda State Park. Some trails run through the Bearfort Mountain Natural Area, which is home to several hardwood forests. The Terrace Pond trails have places to view the composite beds of puddingstone that exist on either side of the pond.

    Wawayanda Swamp Natural Area Trails

    • The Wawayanda Swamp Natural Area has various trails in its 2,167-acre expanse. Trails provide access to view the Atlantic white cedar swamp, hardwood forest and a spring-fed lake. Examples of trails in this area are the Banker Trail, the Laurel Pond Trail and the Cedar Swamp Trail. These trails are located in the center of the park and provide an opportunity for a leisurely hike through mostly level terrain.
