New York City has a reputation for being one of the most expensive cities in the United States. While it is true that New York City can cost a great deal to visit, bargain hunters can enjoy all that the city has to offer without spending too much money. Budget travel to New York City doesn't mean having to give up a true New York City experience. You can still see Broadway, eat well and visit museums without breaking the bank.
Search for the cheapest flight option to New York City if you live too far away to drive. New York City has three main airports and four smaller ones. Check to see if flying into one airport is cheaper than flying into another. Try booking a flight that leaves on a weekday rather than a weekend. Prices usually go up during the weekend.
Book a hostel instead of a hotel. This will save a great deal of money on accommodations as long as you don't mind the community housing.
Go to Central Park during the day for free. There will be a good few hours of entertainment such as lawns for picnics, musicians and artists. Take the Staten Island Ferry for a slow, scenic tour of the city. You will pass the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The ferry is free.
Visit Times Square, Rockerfeller Plaza and St. Patrick's Cathedral for other entertaining and free New York City sights. Then wander Grand Central Station, a restored New York landmark that is another free form of entertainment. The High Line, another New York City sight with no admission fees, is a park built on top of an old elevated railway line. Some museums have a free Friday admission for certain hours in the day. The New York Public Library and Ground Zero are two other free admission sights to hit in New York City.
Look for discounted Broadway tickets online before going to New York City. Some earlier showings may be cheaper than night showings.
Check out the Brooklyn Flea Market on a Saturday or a Sunday for food tasting, art and bargains on crafts and jewelry.
Get a subway pass for the duration of your stay instead of taking cabs. A short cab ride can cost upward of $10; however, a weekly travel card costs only $24.
Buy breakfasts and light lunches at stands and markets instead of diners and restaurants. You will be expected to tip 15 to 20 percent on your bill every time.
