As of 2007, Bear, Delaware's population was 18,499. Bear experienced a boom due to the banking industry in the late 1980s and since that time new construction and sprawling neighborhoods have been what have defined Bear living. Bear boasts convenient living at its best with many shopping centers, restaurants and movie theaters. If, however, you are staying in Bear but have the urge to sink your feet into some sandy beaches, hop in your car and head South to Rohoboth or Dewey Beach.
Drive two hours south from Bear and you will find Dewey Beach. Park your car in one of the many lots and forget about it for the day, Dewey can be accessed by foot from the quaint shopping and restaurants to the beautiful beaches. The beach spans one mile long and three blocks wide offering plenty of space to throw down a towel and soak up some sun. Plan to visit during the week if you are seeking a quiet beach retreat; the weekends on Dewey Beach transform into a sort of East Coast singles scene, attracting youth from Delaware, Baltimore and the DC metro area. Wednesday nights are all about the family when Dewey Beach hosts their weekly bonfire. Bring a blanket, Dewey will supply the sticks, marshmallows and the bonfire. Food and non-alcoholic beverages are for sale as well.
Rehoboth Beach refers to itself as "the year 'round beach town". This idyllic beach setting boasts of the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk where couples stroll hand in hand at dusk, teenagers may partake in the many arcades and children fly kites on the sand beaches. Rohoboth Beach has an official surfing school as well in case you want to get off the sand and challenge the waves. A few steps away Rehoboth offers a historic downtown with over 200 boutiques, galleries and spas, and more than 100 gourmet restaurants.
Bring sandals, sunscreen, towels and hats for the day. At night you may wish to bundle up for a bonfire or enjoy a cool walk on the sand. Bring warmer clothes and a blanket. A few dollars for meals and souvenirs and you should be all set to enjoy your day at two of Delaware's premiere beaches.
