Visitors to the Southeastern part of the United States have the opportunity to explore many beautiful beaches and beach towns. Several beaches in the Southeast also feature boardwalks, which contain shops, restaurants, nightlife and other attractions. Some of the most notable are popular tourist destinations.
Virginia Beach is a popular tourist destination and is also home to the Virginia Beach boardwalk and fishing pier. The boardwalk, actually a concrete walkway, is over three miles long and contains carnival rides, a bike path, restaurants and stores. It is home to over 40 hotels. The bike path is an alternative for people who wish to explore the boardwalk without walking the entire three miles on foot. Visitors can rent single, double and even three or four person bicycles for this purpose.
Opened in May 2010, the 1.2-mile-long Myrtle Beach Boardwalk features shops, restaurants, amusement park rides, and access to parks and other public points of interest, including easy beach access. Part of a campaign to revitalize the city, particularly the downtown area and to increase tourism, the boardwalk is also expected to become home to many additional restaurants, stores and attractions in the coming years.
As of 2010, live music on Tuesdays and Sundays as well as a Kids' Carnival on Monday nights are just some of the events that take place weekly on the boardwalk. This boardwalk replaces several past pavilions and boardwalks built on the same spot. Historic markers along the path pay homage to these past landmarks.
As one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world, Hilton Head Island is home to many beaches and beach boardwalks. Disney's Hilton Head Island resort is home to a Coney Island-style beach boardwalk, and Coligny Beach Park and Folly Field Beach are also adjacent to boardwalks. While some Hilton Head beach boardwalks contain shops and attractions, others are surrounded by the natural beauty of the island, and provide easy access to swimming and surfing spots.
The Miami Beach boardwalk extends from 21st Street to 46th Street and is home to many restaurants, shops, nightclubs and hotels. Notable points of interest include Ink Nightclub, Arden B, Club Monaco, Ritchie Swimwear and Art Connection Jewelry. The boardwalk allows visitors to explore the many different areas of Miami Beach, while providing easy access to the beach at the same time.
