Things to Do North of San Francisco

In 2009, 15.4 million people visited San Francisco. North San Francisco visitors have many attractions from which to choose, including shopping facilities, restaurants, museums, tours and cultural attractions. San Francisco has more than 40 neighborhoods, with many situated north of the city. Japantown, Chinatown, Union Square and Nob Hill are just some of the neighborhoods visitors can explore.

  1. Pier 39

    • Pier 39 is a shopping area situated on 45 acres on the San Francisco Bay. Visitors can explore the area's 110 specialty shops, including Houdini's Magic Shop, The Crystal Shop, Antiquities and Krazy Kaps. There are 14 full-service restaurants that serve everything from California cuisine to seafood and casual dishes. Restaurants include Fog Harbor Fish House, Hana Zen Sushi and Yakitori Bar and the Hard Rock Cafe. Street performers and live music also add to the entertainment of Pier 39. Leashed pets are allowed on the premises. A parking garage is situated across from the complex. Pier 39 is open daily, but hours of operation change seasonally.

    The Wax Museum at Fisherman's Wharf

    • The Wax Museum at Fisherman's Wharf is one of the largest wax museums in the world. The four-story, 100,000-square foot facility houses more than 200 wax figurines in different settings, such as the historic Library of U.S. Presidents, King Tut's Tomb and the Palace of Living Art. The most popular display is the Gallery of Stars which displays wax statues of celebrities, such as Will Smith, Marilyn Monroe, Leonardo DiCaprio, Humphrey Bogart and Michael Jackson. The Wax Museum is open 365 days a year. As of November 2010, tickets cost $14 for adults and $7 for kids ages 6 to 11. Kids ages 12 to 17 and seniors get charged $10 for a ticket.

    Aquarium of the Bay

    • The Aquarium of the Bay is the only waterfront aquarium in San Francisco. The facility is 65,000 square feet and is home to more than 20,000 aquatic animals. Guests can view everything from sharks and jellyfish to starfish and octopus. The aquarium has exhibits including an interactive exhibit where visitors can touch land and marine animals. Every day there are special events such as the feedings of the fish and behind-the-scenes tours. The aquarium is open every day of the year except for Dec. 25. As of November 2010, tickets cost $16.95 for adults and $8 for children and seniors. Special family rates are available.
