The city of Fairfield, named by a ship captain after his home in Connecticut, is in Solano County, California, in the Vallejo-Fairfield metro area. John Muir National Historic Site is a place where you can enjoy indoor and outdoor activities. During the summer and fall you can sample fruits for free from nine acres of fruit orchards. Take a ranger-led wildflower and bird walk during spring or take a full moon walk in the summer months of June, July or August. You can also watch a 20-minute film about John Muir's life in the visitor center or tour Muir's 14-room Victorian mansion.

Discover marsh, grassy hillsides and rocky beaches in Benicia State Recreation Area. The area offers a long list of outdoor recreation such as biking, running, walking, horseback riding and roller blading along the park's 2.5 miles of road and bike paths. Other activities in the dog friendly park are camping, picnicking, bird watching and fishing.
Benicia State Recreation Area is open daily and a parking fee is required.
