Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Colonel Ashley House holds historical significance because of both its original owner and an African American he had enslaved there. Col. John Ashley was a wealthy businessman who supported the American Revolution, and he headed a committee that in 1773 wrote a petition against British tyranny and a plan for individual rights. Later, in 1781, a woman named Mum Bett, who was enslaved at the house, sued Ashley for her freedom and won. Visitors may tour the house, which includes furniture, redware and tool collections, or hike along five miles of trails. The gift shop sells books about Mum Bett.
