About 50 miles north of New York City, the town of West Point overlooks the majestic Hudson River and surrounding valley. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point may be the area's best-known landmark, but the region offers plenty of historic, cultural and outdoor activities for visitors. All of the attractions near West Point are accessible by car and are located within a few miles of each other on both sides of the Hudson River.
A National Historic Landmark, the United States Military Academy at West Point opened in 1802 and serves as the premier education institution for the military officers. Visitors may take part in guided tours beginning at the visitor's center on campus (a valid ID is required for entry to West Point). The West Point Museum of American Military History and the popular Army Intercollegiate Athletics events are two highlights of the West Point experience.

Part of the U.S. Military Academy's grounds, Constitution Island is famous for its role in the Revolutionary War: citizens strung an 80-ton iron chain across the Hudson between the island and West Point, thereby keeping British ships from sailing up the Hudson River. In addition to Revolutionary War fortifications, the island also features the 19th century home of the Warner family, furnished with period furniture and artwork. You may also enjoy hiking trails and tours, available from late June to late September, directed by the Constitution Island Association.

One of the most scenic places to view the Hudson River valley, Harriman State Park boasts 31 lakes and reservoirs, three beaches and 200 miles of hiking trails, plus picturesque mountain roads, breathtaking vistas and camping/recreational facilities. Located on the western side of the Hudson, Harriman State Park is just south of Bear Mountain State Park and West Point.

Take a unique view of the Hudson from the deck of the Commander, a historic 1917 motor vessel. Departing from West Point's south dock, cruises sail past Constitution Island, through the gorge formed by Breakneck Ridge to the east and Storm King Mountain to the west, and up to the ruined castle on Bannerman's Island. The return loop takes you past the charming harbor at Cold Spring and Garrison Island. Tours take place on weekdays only.

Across the Hudson from West Point, the Putnam County Historical Society preserves historic and cultural artifacts pertaining to the Hudson Highlands region, the West Point Foundry (an important ironworks in the 19th century) and surrounding Putnam County. The organization maintains the Foundry School Museum to exhibit its collections as well as shows by contemporary artists.
