Bluegrass music has its roots in a variety of different types of music including gospel, blues, ballads and even dance music. In the 1920s, the invention of the radio and phonograph brought bluegrass music from the Southern states to a wider audience. The concept of a bluegrass festival was first launched in the 1960s with the first official festival being held in Virginia.
The Kalona Bluegrass Festival launched in Kalona, Iowa, in 1986. The three-day festival takes place in July at the Windmill Ridge campgrounds, just south of Kalona. Bluegrass performers come from around the Midwest to take part in the family-friendly event. Campgrounds are available for a fee.
