Outdoor space in New York City is a rarity, and especially in the dense Lower East Side. This neighborhood is a mecca for hipsters and celebrities, as well as an attraction for tourists. There are many bars from which to choose, but only a few provide outdoor space.
If you are looking for a classic pub atmosphere, Boss Tweed is sure to provide a rowdy good time. Come early to take advantage of the happy hour, play pool and throw some darts. The fenced back patio serves as a beer garden and is open year round until midnight.

This three-level bar features shows by rock bands, but the main attraction is the rooftop space during the summer months. An oasis filled with palm trees, fountains and a BBQ, The Delancey's roof feels more like Miami than NYC.

The theme for this bar was inspired by 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Come up for air in the seasonal garden and relax at a communal table or a smaller one if you are on an intimate date. Christmas lights hung on the fire escape add a touch of romance to the space.

A celebrity favorite, the Hotel on Rivington's rooftop is exclusive and a challenge to access. You must navigate an elevator, a narrow hall, a glass stair, a couple of indoor bars and finally a steeper stair. You are rewarded with panoramic views of Manhattan, though the space is often packed. Access is permitted by reservation only. Email James Woods at [email protected] with your name, reservation time and number of guests.

The interior of this bar is dark and run-of-the-mill, despite the pool and pinball tables. Skip the indoor seating in favor of the 50-person outdoor patio. Expect quite a crowd during summer months.
