German food is part of the culinary fare in the Birmingham, Ala., area and it has a restaurant and annual festival that offers the cuisine. Klingler's Bakery, Cafe, & Catering Co. is the sole German restaurant in the Birmingham area and it is located six miles from the city in Vestavia Hills. According to the restaurant's website, it serves baked goods, breakfast and lunch dishes.


However, this is not the only venue for German food as there is an annual Oktoberfest in Birmingham. Items such as soft pretzels, sauerkraut and potato salad are usually available at the multi-day festival.

    • According to Klingler's website, the business serves breakfast from the time it opens during the week at 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. On Saturday, breakfast is served until 1:30 p.m. and there is a brunch on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Items from the breakfast menu that is posted on the restaurant's website include cheese blintzes, a smoked sausage wrap, and a French toast dish that is served with almonds. Items from the lunch menu on the company's website include a Bavarian chicken sandwich, a smoked bratwurst sandwich and a schnitzel sandwich.

    Klingler's Bakery and Catering Items

    • According to the respective menus on its website, Klingler's has a variety of bakery and catering items. As of 2010, catering items include lunches for $7.50 and $9.95 per person. Salads are available for $9.95. Hot lunches are available for $10 per person; however, a minimum of 10 people are needed to order from this part of the menu. Klingler's serves specialty party trays and those prices range from $7.99 for a minimum of 10 people to $125 for 30 to 40 people. Klingler's also has a separate catering menu for its breakfast items, according to its website. There are a variety of items on the restaurant's bakery menu, including a German chocolate cheesecake, Chocolate Bavarian cream torte and a Black Forest torte. Klingler's has other bakery items such as cupcakes and other pastries such as cheesecake brownies.

    Oktoberfest

    • If you want to eat German food at another venue, the Birmingham Friends of German Language and Culture holds an annual Oktoberfest. According to the website al.com, most of the food served is prepared at the festival. Al.com states that most German food contains low fat and natural ingredients. For example, there is no mayonnaise in German potato salad.
