Vacations and Things to Do in the Northeast United States

The Northeastern United States is home to many of the nation’s first social, political and economic centers of prosperity. From old cobblestone-filled towns to the never-ending variety of New York City, the region is bustling with a variety of fun-filled vacations and activities for visitors of all ages.

  1. A Bewitching Weekend in Salem, Massachusetts

    • Salem is rich in pre–Revolutionary War history. Stop into the Witch Dungeon Museum for a chilling experience as reenactments take you through the grueling trials and executions of the accused. Visit Burying Point Cemetery, the nearly 400-year-old cemetery that serves as the final resting place to a witchcraft trial judge as well as a Mayflower passenger. Pay your respects at the Witch Trial Memorial before lightening the mood at Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie, the oldest candy company in the country.

Take a Bite Out of the Big Apple

    • To do a "best of" tour of New York City's top sites, start at Times Square. Snap a few pictures with Madame Tussauds wax figurines, take in a Broadway matinee and admire the bustling city streets with their lit billboards that fill the sky. Hop Line 1 down to the Statue of Liberty to see the symbol of freedom that has welcomed millions of immigrants to the United States. End your time in NYC with a visit to Coney Island. If you are visiting on a Friday evening during the summer season, check out the free evening fireworks show.

Simpler Times in Pennsylvania Amish Country

    • Learn to appreciate simplicity while enjoying homemade apple pie and perusing the intricately constructed quilts for which the Amish are so well known. From countryside tours in an Amish buggy to made-from-scratch home cooking, home goods and crafts, Lancaster County's Amish country is an ideal reprieve from everyday busyness. Make sure to stop into the Lancaster County Visitors Center in Lancaster to pick up informative brochures and speak with experienced guides who can help you map out your day in the Amish countryside.

Take the Scenic Route in Coastal Maine

    • For a truly coastal New England experience, embark on a breathtaking drive along Maine’s rugged shorelines, stopping in to tour Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, which is prominently featured on Maine’s state quarter. Enjoy expansive views of the Atlantic coastline before heading over to the nearby Fisherman’s Museum. Meander along the breezy coastline to soak in the quiet solitude before ending the day at Pemaquid Lobster Co-op for dinner -- the oldest continuously operating lobster co-op in the nation. Feast on a traditional lobster roll while enjoying waterfront views.
