How to Live in the Mountains of Texas

The mountains of Texas are rugged yet beautiful. Living in them is both challenging and rewarding. There are several mountain ranges that run through Texas, including the Davis, Glass, Hueco and Franklin ranges. Each range has its own unique features and landscapes, but common features include high altitudes, rough terrain and an abundance of wildlife. Mountain living can be difficult if you are accustomed to a suburban setting, and transitioning from an urban setting to mountain living can be especially hard. However, with the right attitude and a plan, you can live comfortably in the mountains of Texas.

Things You'll Need

  • House
  • Money
  • Transportation
  • Fully stocked tool-box
  • Land phone line

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a house or purchase the plot of land on which to build a house. In isolated areas like the Glass and Davis Mountains, real estate listings are few and far between. However, the Franklin Mountains are located near El Paso, Texas, where housing is abundant. Depending on what setting you are looking for, suburban or isolated, you can find it in one of the many mountain ranges in Texas.

    • 2

Purchase a car that is capable of handling the rough roads and rugged terrains of the Texas mountain ranges. Living on a mountain may mean a long, unpaved driveway, so having a car with four-wheel drive is beneficial. If you purchase or build an isolated house high in the Hueco Mountains of Texas, consider buying a car that can cope with steeper hills and unpaved roadways.

    • 3

Invest in a full set of quality tools. Living in the mountains can mean isolation, so learning simple home repair skills can save money and will make you more self-reliant. If you live in an isolated area in the mountains, it will not always be possible for a professional to come out and make repairs, so having a tool-box on hand will help in case you need to make minor home repairs.

Install a land phone line. You cannot always rely on a cellular phone in isolated regions like the Davis Mountains, and in case you need to make an emergency call, a landline can be used if a cell phone fails.
