Historical preservation grants in Florida are intended to protect and rehabilitate both archaeological and historic sites in the state. From preserving areas of historical significance, to funding museum exhibits and even revitalizing the downtown area of communities within the state, historical preservation grants allow Florida's past to remain vibrant in the present.
Agencies or departments within Florida, such as universities, nonprofit organizations or local government units, can receive up to $50,000 in matching grants for projects that help to identity, preserve or rehabilitate sites of historical significance in the state. Examples of projects that qualify for these grants include archaeological site excavation and community education such as tours and special school programs. Applications are reviewed and grants are awarded based on criteria such as the historic significance of the project and the ability of the organization to carry it out successfully.
Special category grants are awarded for major preservation projects such as museum exhibits pertaining to the history of Florida and significant restoration of historical sites in the state. Applicants must have a minimum requirement of $50,000 for their projects; up to $350,000 can be awarded. State agencies and departments such as universities, nonprofit organizations, counties and cities are eligible to apply for these grants.
The purpose of the Main Street Program is to revitalize or improve the historical and downtown areas of communities within the state of Florida. A chosen community receives a grant of $10,000 and technical help from the state's Bureau of Preservation to assist in carrying out the revitalization. As an example of this program, the city of Deland, Florida, was awarded the grant in 1997 and was able to turn around a downtown area that was three-quarters vacant into an area with active office and retail space. This, in turn, created 450 jobs.
