Romantic Weekday Getaways in Ohio

Weekdays in the Buckeye State probably aren't the first things that come to mind in terms of romantic getaways. But Ohio has plenty to offer in this realm. Its topography lends itself to outdoor adventures both tame and challenging, and its city offerings can incite hand holding and heart pounding among the staunchest cynics. Romantics can even take their cues from the state's shape and former publicity slogan, which was "The Heart of It All."

  1. Put-In-Bay

    • This Lake Erie Island, used as a summer resort since the 1800s, remains relatively isolated when the water around it freezes and the snow blows, but during the warm weather months the island is filled with visitors admiring its views and enjoying its laid-back atmosphere. Couples venturing here on weekdays have a better chance of avoiding the hard-drinking masses that descend on weekends to patronize the many bars and wineries that dot the island. More elbow room is available for island touring via golf cart or bicycles; views atop the 352-foot Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial, which opens weekdays in late April and island house and boat ogling.

    Mohican State Park and Forest

    • Mohican State Park, with Mohican State Forest next to it, offers hiking and bridle trails galore and breathtaking views of north-central Ohio. The park spans 1,110 acres and includes a tame 5-mile Mohican River span which visitors can tube, canoe, fish and swim. The state forest, encompassing 4,795 acres, surrounds the park.

Some of the more popular attractions include the Gorge Overlook, covered bridge and Pleasant Hill Dam. Brave visitors will find the 80-foot fire tower climb to their liking, particularly on peak fall color days.

    Amish Country

    • Fall is also a good time to visit Amish Country, especially on warm autumn days, although other seasons present picturesque views as well. As at Put-in-Bay, weekdays in this region, not far from Mohican State Park and Forest, are better for visiting because crowds tend to flock there on weekends. Scenic drives through the rolling countryside are punctuated by visits to Amish businesses famed for their culinary talents, furniture-making capabilities and quilting. Millersburg, Berlin and Walnut Creek are home to the largest concentration of Amish in the world.
