New York City is a popular destination during winter break for families because New Yorkers really know how to embrace the holiday spirit. For example, Times Square is lit up with lights and Rockefeller Center features its famous decorated tree and ice skating. While New York can be cold in the winter, there are plenty of things to do with children that will make the trip memorable.
The 22-acre Rockefeller Center is one of the city's prime destinations for winter activities. While normally a good place to visit, this Midtown location is even better in the winter, with the lighting of the Christmas tree and the center's famous ice rink. The lighting of the tree has been a big event for years and features carolers.
Also located at Rockefeller Center is Radio City Music Hall, where the famed annual Christmas Spectacular with the Radio City Rockettes will thrill the whole family with dancing and seasonal music.

New York is famous for Broadway and its musicals. While not all the shows are appropriate for children, there usually are family-friendly choices available. Tickets can be bought in advance online or by phone at sites like Broadway.com or Ticketmaster.com.
Tickets also can be purchased right at theater box offices or at a TKTS booth--located in Times Square, South Street Seaport and Downtown Brooklyn--for discounted tickets the day of the show. It is important to keep in mind that the most popular shows sell out well in advance, so visitors during winter break should plan ahead.
