Activities for September in Syracuse, New York

Named after Siracusa, an ancient city in Sicily, Syracuse, New York, is a city full of activity options no matter what your interests. Museums, the opera, hockey, the symphony -- these are just a few of the options available in this city throughout the year. If you are a fan of festivals and fairs, however, the month of September is one of the best times of the year to be in Syracuse. Whether you're looking to celebrate your heritage, fit in some outdoor exercise or just soak up a little culture, you should be able to find what you're looking for.
  1. Syracuse Irish Festival

    • If your definition of going green is celebrating all things Irish, head to the Syracuse Irish Festival. This event held annually in September features several musicians on stage playing traditional Irish music. You can also take in Irish dancing performances. If learning about the culture is more up your alley, the festival also has many speakers covering a variety of topics. The 2010 event, for example, featured guests presenting on the ancient Gaelic language, Irish history and literature. Plenty of Irish food, gift items and activities for children are available too.

    Festa Italiana Syracuse

    • September's Festa Italiana Syracuse is an event that may be appealing if you're Italian -- or just love what Italy has to offer. Several activities take place during the three-day event, providing options that both adults and kids will enjoy. Like the Syracuse Irish Festival, Festa Italiana Syracuse offers visitors the opportunity to watch Italian musicians and sample Italian cuisine. The Bocce tournament is also an annual part of the festivities.

    Westcott Street Cultural Fair

    • The Westcott Street Cultural Fair, held in the Westcott neighborhood of Syracuse, takes place for one day each September. The event's focus is to celebrate the diversity of the neighborhood. Visual arts, music, dancing and food are part of the festivities. A glance at the 2010 fair schedule gives you an idea of what to expect at Westcott; a parade, belly dancing, African drumming, craft making and swing dancing are just a few of the events that took place in 2010.

    Strathmore Parks Run

    • After indulging in a month of festival and fair food, you may be itching to burn off some of those calories. Participating in the annual Strathmore Parks Run is one way to get more active. The Greater Strathmore Neighborhood Association sponsors this event. You can take part in a four-mile run that provides views of the neighborhood's historic area, Onondaga Park and the Syracuse skyline. The run features both hills and off-road running. There's also a children's race that takes place following the main event.
