Deadwood is a city filled with legends from the Old West. It was once populated by historical figures named Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. Despite being a major tourist attraction, the town has managed to maintain a bit of Victorian charm with its architecture and atmosphere. This is a place for history buffs as well as for adventure enthusiasts and families seeking a destination with plenty of interactive activities.

  1. Historic Sites and Activities

    • Deadwood used to be a mining town. Tourist activities such as panning for gold at the Broken Boot Mine bring this aspect of the city's past to life. The nearby Mount Mora Cemetery is the final resting place of legendary Deadwood figures, including Bill Hickok. The cemetery is a stop along the route of Deadwood's Historic Ghost Tours, which start at the Bullock Hotel. The Adams House Museum is a faithfully restored Queen Anne style Victorian mansion that is filled with period artifacts.

    • Deadwood is filled with casinos. Many hotels, bars and restaurants also offer gambling options in the form of slot machines and computer-based games. Some of the larger casinos, such as the Gold Dust and the Midnight Star, are almost always filled near capacity and offer free drinks and appetizers to those who are gambling.

There were millions of these creatures on the plains near Deadwood until they were hunted to near extinction before the beginning of the 1900s.

    • Many of Deadwood's eateries have an Old West theme in their decor and menus. Places like the Deadwood Social Club, Miss Kitty's, and Diamond Lil's line Main Street. It is possible to take a break from the Old West at venues like Oyster Bay Restaurant.

      There are souvenir-buying opportunities throughout Deadwood. Specialty stores like Chubby Chipmunk Hand Dipped Chocolates and Deadwood Gift Shoppe (which specializes in locally made goods) are popular with tourists looking for something out of the ordinary.
