Things to Do in New York City on a Rainy Day

New York is a fun place to visit anytime of the year because there are so many things to do. Since so many of these leisure activities occur indoors, finding something to do when it rains is not that difficult.

  1. Art

    • Visit a museum that features modern art. New York has quite a few museums that showcase modern and contemporary art. Your first stop might be the Museum of Modern Art, whose very name goes hand in hand with some of the great contemporary paintings of the past 100 years. It is on 53rd Street near Fifth Avenue. Or you might want to choose the Guggenheim Museum, the fabulous rotunda of an art museum that kind of looks like like a parking garage when viewed from the outside. The building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and is worth a close examination along with the artwork that is displayed inside. This unique museum is on Fifth Avenue at the intersection of 89th Street. But maybe the biggest surprise of all is the Whitney Museum of Art, a fine museum that is dedicated almost solely to the exhibition and display of noteworthy American artists. This fine-art institution is on Madison Avenue at 75th Street. Choose one of the three or make a day out out of it and visit all of them.

    Broadway

    • Go see a Broadway show. The theater district of Manhattan is unsurpassed, for nowhere else in America will you find so many top-notch theaters, hosting such a wide range of entertaining live performances. Check out all that Broadway has to offer and perhaps you will find an affordable afternoon matinee. The Broadway theaters are concentrated in a square block that is between Broadway Avenue and Eighth Avenue in midtown Manhattan.

    Literary Scene

    • Visit the New York City Library. You won't be able to check out any books unless you have a library card, but the beautiful architecture and varied exhibitions of old books and contemporary art is worth the effort. The main library is on Fifth Avenue near Times Square, but there are 26 branches scattered across the city to choose from. However, if you would like to get a book to take back to your hotel room, you can browse a book store. You can visit one of the "biggies" such as Barnes and Noble or search out one of the many specialty or independent bookstores that are located all over the city, which is also the book-publishing capital of the United States.
