Why is Washington DC included in Southeast US region?

Washington D.C. is not included in the Southeast US region. It is located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The Southeast US region includes the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
