The Best Airlines to Travel Within America

When deciding which airline to use to move you around the country, it is important to consider several factors. These factors may include an airline's ability to offer first class service and the overall size of its fleet. A large airline may fly into more airports, while a midsized airline may be cheaper. Luckily, several organizations including Zagat, Travel and Leisure and J.D. Power and Associates have rated domestic airlines on a variety of these factors.
  1. JetBlue Airways

    • JetBlue is rated highly by several sources. "Zagat" has called it the best when it comes to economy seating. They also lauded its in-flight entertainment as the best overall. "Travel and Leisure" magazine declared JetBlue the second best domestic airline when considering all travel details. It is the only large domestic airline to receive a four-star ranking from Skytrax. JetBlue also had the third best score from the annual Air Quality Report from Wichita State University.

    Continental

    • This is a highly rated airline and regarded as the best of the legacy carriers, which are the airlines that have been around for several decades. "Zagat" rated Continental the best in terms of premium seats. J.D. Power and Associates also rates Continental highly for in-flight services. Their AQR rating was -1.09 in 2009, making it the sixth highest rated airline with flights being on-time 78.8 percent of the time. The website "Travel Truth" writes that Continental is regarded as the "top-rated major U.S. Airline."

    Virgin America

    • This airline didn't get ranked on the AQR scale, but it has the highest rating from "Travel and Leisure." "Zagat" placed it at the top of their list of midsized domestic airlines for its premium seating. It was also rated second in midsized domestic airlines offering economy seating. "Travel Truth" describes Virgin as "one of the world's great airlines." Virgin America does not have a Skytrax ranking, but Virgin's international branches are rated highly with four stars.

    Southwest

    • Southwest is a highly rated airline for economy travel within America. "Travel and Leisure" placed it fifth on their 2009 list of overall ratings, an improvement from the previous year. "Zagat" rated them very highly, giving them accolades for "top website," "best consumer on-time estimates," "best value" and "best luggage policy." They have a 3-star rating from Skytrax. This is not the highest rating of 5-stars, but it is higher than most domestic airlines and does constitute a satisfactory standard of service. On the AQR report, Southwest is noted to have the lowest number of customer complaints, and incidences of baggage mishandling have decreased.
