Tips on Toddlers Flying on Planes

Plane flights can be difficult for little ones, as there is a need to sit still. This is especially true for long flights. When flying, kids are unable to get up and run around, and they might not understand why they are being confined. Being prepared for a plane flight and bringing the proper items will help ease your toddler and make your flight easier.
  1. Backpack

    • Purchase a toddler-sized backpack on wheels that your little one can roll through the airport and bring onto the plane. Inside, pack small, non-noise-making toys, coloring books and activity books, to keep her busy while in flight. Pack some snacks for the flight, such as lollipops, gummies and pretzels. This will help her with any mid-flight munchies and ease the pressure that may build in her ears.

    Build Excitement

    • Some toddlers can be afraid of flying, simply because they are unaware of what to expect while flying. Talk to your toddler and get her excited about the trip, by explaining where you are going and what she can do once the flight lands. This will give her something to look forward to, if she knows the final destination of the plane trip.

    Dress Comfortably

    • Dress your toddler in comfortable clothing, such as those with elastic waste bands and those that do not have a lot of buttons or require a belt. She will be more comfortable and more likely to take a nap during the flight. There also will be less wiggling on her part, since she will not have a hard time getting comfortable in her seat.

    Arrive Early

    • Passengers have to arrive early to ensure there is enough time to get through preflight registration, security checkpoints and to the terminal in time to board the plane. This process can take longer than usual, if traveling with a toddler. Arrive at the airport between two and three hours before you are expected to board your flight, to ensure enough time to get through the airport. Toddlers often need bathroom or snack breaks before boarding, which can slow down your progress through the airport.

    Safety

    • Your child will be safer and more comfortable if you ensure she has the proper seating for her flight. Either bring your child's car seat, if it is compatible with an airplane, or purchase a CARES Child Aviation Restraint System belt, which easily attaches to the regular plane seat-belt, making it suitable for small children. CARES belts can be purchased from a variety of on-line retailers.
