According to the Fare Compare website, American, Continental, Delta, United and US Airways tack on a $30 surcharge to a one-way flight on these dates, as of December 2010.
Fly with Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska or Frontier to avoid the surcharges mentioned in Step 1 on peak travel days. As of December 2010, these airlines do not have these surcharges.
Purchase your airline tickets as far in advance as possible. Many airlines offer discounts for advance purchases. Log on to the official airline websites to get quotes on tickets and compare them.
Travel during off-peak hours, such as very early in the morning or late at night, to reduce additional airline fares.
