Luggage Requirements for JetBlue Airlines

JetBlue’s requirements for carry-on and checked luggage are designed to maximize passenger convenience as well as airline profit and carrying capacity. Many of its rules that involve safety and security come not from corporate headquarters but from the Transportation Security Administration. However, the airline may impose rules that are more restrictive but not less than those of TSA.
  1. Carry-on Bag

    • Passengers can bring one carry-on bag that fits in the overhead bin above the seat and a personal item that fits under the seat in front of them. Carry-on limits depend on the airplane type. For Airbus 320s, the maximum size is 26 by 18 by 12 inches. For Embraer 190s, the size is 24 by 16 by 10 inches. Personal items, which can consist of briefcases, purses, laptops or similar, must be under 17 by 12.5 by 8 inches. The only exceptions are medical assistance devices such as oxygen tanks, which do not count as a carry-on item.

Liquids, gels and aerosols are prohibited in carry-ons except for 3.4-ounce/100ml capacity containers that all fit in a 1 quart (liter) transparent plastic bag that must be sealable. The following substances are exempt from these limitations: medications, baby formula, and liquids for medical and disability needs. (REFERENCE 3) Prohibited items include sharp objects like box cutters, razor-type blades, metal scissors with blades longer than four inches, drills, wrenches, hammers, firearms, ammunition, strike-anywhere matches and paint. Checked Baggage

    • Each passenger can check in one bag for free if it has combined maximum measurements (height, width and length) of 62 inches and is no heavier than 50 pounds. Boxes are not allowed as checked baggage on international flights. A second bag or any luggage over these limits are assessed additional fees. However, bags over 99 pounds and 80 inches are not allowed. Military personnel on active duty can check in a second bag for free if it meets these limits.

Luggage must be checked in at least 30 minutes before domestic flights and 60 minutes before international flights, but no more than four hours before the scheduled departure time. International flights require checking in at the ticket counter. The passenger who checks in the item must also board the aircraft.

    Special Items

    • JetBlue accepts many types of sporting goods as a free checked item if they meet the checked baggage restrictions. These include items for bowling, fishing, golf and scuba, but not gas cylinders. Surfboards, snow skis, water skis, hockey and lacrosse sticks also count as checked luggage but are not allowed on flights to/from the Dominican Republic. Items that incur a fee include surfboards and bicycles, which require packing in a hard case, and windsurfing equipment.

Firearms are not allowed on international flights to/from the U.S. but may be checked in as a free luggage piece on domestic flights. They must be unloaded and stored in crushproof containers that are designed for the firearm and that are lockable. The key or combination must be provided to the security officer in case she needs to inspect the container. Ammunition must be stored in a separate container from the firearm and can weigh up 11 pounds per container.
