Requirements for an R1 Visa

Those who are seeking employment in the United States need to apply for an R1 Visa, but certain qualifications must be met before being granted permission to enter the U.S. for a period of time. This type of visa is for religious workers, hence the "R." Belonging to and participating or working in a recognized religious environment are the main basis for an R1 Visa.
  1. Religious Affiliation

    • The applicant must be a member of the nonprofit religious organization for at least two years, and the religious denomination must also be located in the U.S. as a nonprofit organization.

    Tax Exempt

    • The organization to which the applicant plans to work for must be tax exempt, or qualify for tax exempt status.

    Form I-129

    • The applicant must fully complete Form I-129, which can be obtained online or at an agency. This form is a petition for a non-immigrant worker to come to the United States.

    Length of Stay

    • Stay in the U.S. for the time awarded with the R1 Visa and not a day over. Staying even one day past the date of departure will cause your Visa to be voided, which may prevent future chances of renewing or obtaining another R1 Visa.

    Financial Proof

    • Provide proof of financial responsibility of the organization being able to support you. The proof has to be sufficient enough so that you are not living below poverty level.
