Visa & Passport Requirements for Barbados

Barbados is a coral island southeast of Puerto Rico and northeast of Venezuela. The west coast is on the Caribbean Sea and the east coast the Atlantic Ocean. It was initially settled in 1600 B.C. by the Amerindians, descendants of the first to cross the Alaskan land bridge. It was discovered by the Portuguese on their way to Brazil, conquered by the Spanish in 1492, abandoned and then colonized by the British until it achieved its full independence in 1966.

Part of the British commonwealth, Barbados is known for its beautiful beaches, friendly citizens and activities from cricket to kitesurfing and scuba diving to swimming with the turtles.
  1. Entry

    • You must have a passport that is valid for the duration of your stay. In the United States, you can get a passport application at most post offices. You can also get an application online at http://travel.state.gov/passport/forms/forms_841.html.

    Student Visas

    • All non-nationals who wish to study in Barbados must have a student visa. They are issued only by the Department of Immigration in Barbados. To apply for a student visa, you must complete forms H-1 and H-2, have them stamped by the school principal and submit them with a valid passport and four photographs to the chief immigration officer. If the student's parents live in Barbados, the parents' valid work permit must accompany the application. Processing time is generally four weeks.

    Work Visas

    • It is difficult to obtain a work permit in Barbados, as the Barbadian government tries to restrict retail and tourism jobs to Barbadian nationals. If you have a skill in short supply in Barbados, you may be granted a permit for the job if no qualified Barbadian can be found. You may also be granted a permit if what you are doing will improve tourism. Applications like these are processed by the employer.

    Fees

    • The fee for a work permit is $100 USD. Once permission and the permit are granted, there is a fee of $400 USD, which will allow you to reside and work in Barbados.

    Exceptions

    • Barbados requires the citizens of some countries to have a passport and a visa if they are tourists. In this case, you must complete Form J, in duplicate, and remit $50 USD for a single entry and $60 USD for multiple entries. In addition, you must submit copies of the personal pages of your passport, one photograph, evidence of residence if you are stating somewhere other than your country of birth.
