Australian Passport Requirements

Applications for an Australian passport must be completed and submitted at an Australia Post outlet. If you are out of the country, the application may be submitted to an Australian consulate mission. An interview is required when you submit the application. Passports are valid for 10 years; senior passports are valid for five years and are available to individuals 75 years old and older. Child passports are available for children under the age of 18 and may be applied for by the child's parent or legal guardian.
  1. Citizenship

    • You must be a citizen of Australia to obtain an Australian passport. If you were born in Australia, you must submit a copy of your birth certificate. If you were born after August 20, 1986, you must also submit proof that at least one of your parents was an Australian citizen. If you were not born in Australia, you must submit an Australian citizenship certificate. These documents will be required at the interview.

    Photo

    • You must provide two color photographs taken within the previous six months. A guarantor must endorse the photographs to certify that they are photos of you. Photos must be 35 to 40 millimeters or 1.4 to 1.6 inches wide and 45 to 50 millimeters or 1.8 to two inches high. The photos must have a light-colored, plain background, and you must be looking directly at the camera with a neutral expression and mouth closed. Hair may not be in your eyes, and if you normally wear glasses, you should wear glasses in the photo.

    Interview

    • An interview is required for all adult applicants. Children under the age of 18 do not need to be interviewed unless they have been married. At the interview, you will submit your application, photographs, proof of citizenship, and documents proving your identity such as a driver's license. Questions will be asked in regards to the information on your application.

    Fees

    • As of 2010, the fee for a new or renewal passport is 208 Australian dollars for adults and 104 Australian dollars for children. Payment must be made by cash, electronic funds transfer at point of sale (EFTPOS) or credit card. Checks are not accepted.

    Renewal

    • If you renew your passport while it is still current or has been expired for less than two years, you will submit a pre-filled out form and two photographs. No other documentation is required. You must complete the entire application process if your passport is lost, stolen, expired for more than two years or if you change your name.
