Applying for a Visa can be done online or in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate. Companies, colleges and high school exchange programs can also help with the visa application process if they are designated to issue visas through the U.S. State Department. You must supply your reason for entering the country, amount of time you intend to stay and proof you have the funds available to support yourself during your stay. These amounts differ depending on the type of visa for which you are applying.
Passports are required and must be valid at least six months beyond the dates of your intended stay in the U.S. The passport is your identification while in the country and should always be kept in a safe place. If you lose your passport, you must go to a consulate in the U.S. to obtain a replacement as soon as possible.
Each type of visa has its own requirements but most require a photograph for each person entering the U.S. The photo must have been taken within the last six months. This photograph must be unmounted and of the full face of the person applying for the visa. It must be 2-by-2 inches with the head covering 50 percent of the center of the photo. This photo must be taken with a white or off-white background. This photo is stapled or otherwise affixed to the application.
A fee is charged for processing the visa. These fees differ for each type of visa so it is best to check the U.S. State Department's website when you are ready to apply for your visa. This can be paid through the State Department website or at the consulate where you apply. You will be issued a receipt for this fee and will be required to bring this receipt to the interview. This fee is nonrefundable.
There may also be a visa insurance fee that is based on reciprocity of fees charged to U.S. citizens in corresponding countries. This fee is refundable if the visa is denied.
Persons between 14 and 79 are required to interview at the American Consulate. Digital fingerprints are usually taken at the interview. Be sure to schedule the interview early as wait times to get in for the interview can vary.
