Design and Layout of Jamestown Fort (1607)
Jamestown Fort (James Fort), the first permanent English fort in North America, had a distinctive design:
Shape & Dimensions
- Irregular pentagon with a bastion at each of the five corners.
- ~200 ft × 100 ft (~0.5 acre).
Defenses
- Palisade wall of sharpened vertical logs.
- Bastions armed with cannons (demiculverins, falcons, minions).
Interior Structures
- Wattle-and-daub houses (single-story) for settlers.
- Governor's house (larger, prominent).
- Storehouse for provisions.
- Church ("Minister's House") for Anglican services.
- Watchtower at one corner for surveillance.
- Well for fresh water.
Gates
- Main river-facing gate (water access for ships).
- Landward gate (for foraging, exploration).
Archaeological excavations at Historic Jamestowne have confirmed this layout, revealing postholes, foundations, and artifacts.
