Wisconsin boasts roughly 2,000 miles (3,219 km) of canals, one of the most extensive artificial waterway networks in the United States. These canals, many dating to the 19th century, were built for transportation, logging, drainage, and later recreation. The Fox–Wisconsin Waterway and the Milwaukee Canal are historic examples. Today, many segments support boating, fishing, and wildlife habitat, while others have been repurposed as trails.
