Vessels Exempt from Registration in Virginia

In Virginia, the following vessels do not require registration:

• Vessels under 16 feet in length (non-motorized or motorized).
• Sailboards under 13 feet in length.
• Non-motorized canoes under 12 feet in length.

All other motorized vessels and sailboats over 16 feet must be registered with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR). Always verify current regulations on the DWR website.
