Correction: The First Fleet Did Not Settle Van Diemen's Land

The First Fleet arrived at Botany Bay in January 1788 and established the first European settlement at Sydney Cove (Port Jackson)—the colony of New South Wales.

Van Diemen's Land (renamed Tasmania in 1856) was not settled by the British until 1803, when Lieutenant John Bowen established a camp at Risdon Cove, followed by David Collins' settlement at Sullivan's Cove (Hobart) in 1804.

The confusion may stem from both being early Australian penal colonies, but they were separate ventures 15 years apart.
