The Bering Strait separates easternmost Russia from westernmost Alaska and connects the Arctic Ocean with the Bering Sea (part of the Pacific Ocean).
It is named after Vitus Bering, a Danish explorer in Russian service whose early 18th-century expeditions led to its European discovery.
