Why Venice Is Not Named "City of Water"

The name Venice (Italian: Venezia) derives from the ancient Veneti (or Enetoi), an Indo-European people who inhabited the northeastern Italian coast and lagoons in the 1st millennium BCE.

  • Latin: Venetia → denoted the region (Venetia et Histria).
  • Venetian dialect: Venesia → Italian Venezia.
  • English "Venice" from French Venise.

No etymological link to water (Latin aqua, Italian acqua). The "City of Water" (or "City of Canals") is a descriptive nickname earned by its unique lagoon setting, not the origin of its name.
