Spain's Gains from Supporting the American Revolution

Spain's entry into the American Revolutionary War (1779) as an ally of France (not directly of the U.S.) yielded significant territorial and commercial rewards in the 1783 Treaty of Paris:

  • Recovery of Florida: Spain regained both East and West Florida from Britain.
  • Mississippi River Access: Secured navigation rights on the Mississippi, previously denied by the British.
  • Trading Rights: Gained commercial access to the newly independent United States.
  • Minorca: Recovered the strategic Mediterranean island from Britain (in a separate exchange).

While Spain did not gain territory in the northern U.S., these concessions strengthened its position in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean.
