Get a place to stay. Tybee Island is home to several hotels, condos and bed and breakfasts and also is near lodging places at neighboring islands and in Savannah. Book a room at a shore-side hotel or at an inland lodge, which is only a few steps from the beach.

    • 2

Enjoy the seaside. Spend time on the beach at a hotel pool, catching some rays by the ocean, walking or fishing on the pier or eating at a oceanfront restaurant.

    • 3

Be a part of history. Visit historical island sites such as Fort Pulaski, the Cockspur Lighthouse and the Tybee Island Lighthouse, which is coupled next to Fort Screven; Fort Jackson is also on a neighboring island. The cost to enter the lighthouses and the forts are often a few dollars for adults and sometimes free for kids. Call ahead or check online before your visit to see if they are having a daily cannon firing or visits from “soldiers.”

Go to the pier. The Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion offers food and drinks, fishing and beautiful views. At various times during the year, the pier features live music and other events. Nearby are local restaurants, shops, hotels and the Tybee Island Marine Science Center.

Enjoy nature. Several businesses give dolphin tours, parasailing, kayaking and boat rides. Tybee Island also is home to several parks and nature trails, including one at Fort Pulaski.

    • 6

Eat out. The pavilion and area hotels offer food choices, but also check out such popular eateries as The Crab Shack (a waterview with live alligators), AJ’s Dockside (limited parking), Café Loco, Spanky’s, Sting Ray’s and other seafood, steak and family restaurants.

    • 7

Watch out for sea turtles. From May to October, endangered sea turtles can be found nesting on the beaches of Tybee Island at night. During this time, guests are asked to use limited lights at night, not pollute the beaches and not touch the nests.

Step outside of the island. If you are in town for longer than a weekend, check out neighboring islands and Savannah. Savannah boasts historical spots, river boats, carriage and haunted tours and restaurants like Paula Deen’s The Lady and Sons.
