How to Visit St. Croix

The beautiful island of St. Croix is an ideal place for a relaxing Caribbean vacation. St. Croix began as a Danish colony, and the island's Danish roots are evident in the names of towns like Frederiksted and Christiansted. The once-great plantations that have fallen into ruin testify to St. Croix's past as a thriving agricultural community. Today, St. Croix is one of the three islands that make up the U.S. Virgin Islands, and is a favorite choice for travelers to the Caribbean.

Instructions

    • 1

Charter a boat to take you out to Buck Island Reef National Monument. The island offers the kind of beaches that come to mind when you think of a Caribbean paradise, as well as spectacular snorkeling and scuba diving (see Resources below).

    • 2

Go shopping in Christiansted. The charming downtown area of Christiansted is perched on the water's edge and is filled with brightly colored buildings that date back to the 1700s. Browse among the clothing, jewelry and souvenir shops, get a bite to eat, then take a stroll along the coast.

    • 3

See a fort. In Christiansted, Fort Christiansvaern's bright yellow color distinguishes it from its surroundings. Built by the Danish in 1749, the fort is in the best shape among St. Croix's forts.

    • 4

See the Old Danish Customs House. This historical building is worth a look. Located near Fort Christiansvaern, it once served as a customs house for the island and is a good example of European architecture with an island flavor. It is now a national park facility.

    • 5

Head to Point Udall, about half an hour from Christiansted. Travelers like to visit this spot for its magnificent views and so they can say they've been at the easternmost point of the United States.

    • 6

Visit St. George Village Botanical Gardens. This 17-acre botanical garden is located at the ruins of a seventeenth century plantation village. Visitors can see examples of the different types of plants and ecosystems found on St. Croix, such as cactus and rainforest, and view the rainbow of colorful flowers growing in the orchid house.

    • 7

Tour the Cruzan Rum Distillery. You'll be taken through the factory, which has been in operation since 1760, then offered a generous sample of the distillery's products. You can opt to purchase a few bottles of rum at the gift shop, where you'll find the prices quite reasonable. Remember, though, that they can't be carried onto the plane on the way home, so you'll need to pack them in your checked luggage.

Spend a few hours at a casino. If you love to take your chances at the gambling tables, you'll want to head to the casino at the Divi Carina Bay. The gambling, combined with great music, makes this a popular night spot.
