The Three Major Types of Water Bodies
The primary classification of natural water bodies by size and salinity:
- Ocean – Vast, saline, covers ~71% of Earth. Five named: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, Arctic.
- Sea – Saline, partially enclosed by land, smaller than oceans. Examples: Mediterranean, Caribbean, South China, Red Sea.
- Lake – Inland body of fresh (mostly) or saline water, surrounded by land. Range from pond-sized to Caspian Sea (largest, saline).
Other notable types: Rivers/streams (flowing), wetlands (marshes, swamps), lagoons, reservoirs (artificial), groundwater (aquifers).
The ocean-sea-lake hierarchy captures the fundamental scale and connectivity distinctions in Earth's hydrosphere.
