When would you use water displacement?

Determining the volume of irregular objects

Water displacement is particularly useful for measuring the volume of irregular objects that cannot be easily measured by traditional means. These objects can be submerged in a graduated cylinder filled with water, causing the water level to rise. The amount of water displaced is equal to the volume of the submerged object.

Archimedes principle

It demonstrates Archimedes principle, which states that the buoyant force acting on an object submerged in a fluid is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.

Calculating density

Water displacement can also be used to determine the density of an object. Density is defined as the mass of an object per unit volume. By knowing the mass and volume of an object, its density can be calculated using the formula:

Density = Mass/Volume

Measuring specific gravity

Water displacement is used to measure the specific gravity of an object, which is the ratio of its density to the density of water. Specific gravity is a dimensionless quantity often used to compare the densities of different substances.
